Gmail down again worldwide - May 8, 2009

On May 8, 2009 2:19 AM PDT, Google’s beta internet mail service, Gmail was downtime for at least the last 20 minutes.

Accessing Gmail will give you “Oooops…. the system encountered a problem,” giving error 500, error messages.

Immediately, Gmail was down, twitter was flooded with “gmail down” updates:

My Gmail is down !!! “Temporary Error (500) : We’re sorry, but your Gmail account is temporarily unavailable.

Gmail is down! Gmail is down! Gmail is down! Gmail is down! Gmail is down! We’re all going to die!!!!!

Google Apps users too have not been spared. Once you login, either on Gmail on your Google Apps mail page, you’re greeted with the Temporary Error (500) message. If you were already logged in whilst the outage happened, you might see the “Oops the system
encountered a problem (#767) - Retrying…” message.

According to Google on Google Apps Site:

We’re aware of a problem with Google Mail affecting a significant number of users. The affected users are unable to access Google Mail. We will provide an update by May 8, 2009 5:19:00 AM UTC-7 detailing when we expect to resolve the problem. Please note that this resolution time is an estimate and may change.
