Google.co.ma, the domain name for Google Morocco’s search portal, was taken hostage by hackers yesterday reportedly for several hours before the problem got fixed.

It appears that hackers found a way into NIC.ma, which controls the DNS for the country, and targeted the Google domain name especially. The domain was pointed to Pak Bugs website, and the web page above was shown when people tried to access the search engine.

Habib Haddad the Founder of Yamli, tweeted this discovery on twitter.

Initially Google redirected visitors from www.google.ca.ma to www.google.com instead of Google.co.ma.

Google.co.ma is working now.

Zorgloob.com (in French) claims that this isn’t the first such incident this year, as apparently the websites for Google Algeria and Google Puerto Rico were taken hostage by hackers last month too.

Update:  It’s appear that the hosting company Softlayer closed PaKBugs.com site after receiving an email from Google.

Update:  Google spokesperson told ArabCrunch:

“Google services in Morocco are not hacked. Since Friday PST, some users visiting www.google.co.ma were redirected to a different website. We’re in touch with the appropriate hosting service to help investigate the issue.”
