Offline support for Google Docs: A Step by Step guide

Google released one of the most expected features: offline support for Google Docs.
This means that Google Docs, a free web-based word processor and spreadsheet, which allow you share and collaborate online is now accessible even without an Internet connection.

You can edit or view your documents, spreadsheets and presentations without Internet connection and the files will synchronize when a connection is restored

To enable offline access to Google docs, you have to download the Google Gear ( Size: 220 KB ). Gears is a plug-in that extends your browser to create a richer platform for web applications. Gears is available for Windows, Windows Mobile, Mac, and Linux

To use Google docs, make sure you have BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) service running, which transfers files in the background using idle network bandwidth.

After installing Gear, you have to enable the offline access to Google docs as shown below.

You can create a desktop shortcut to Google Docs using Setting option in Gear.

Didn’t like Offline Google docs? Switch back is very easy. You can any time reset the offline access to Google docs as shown below.
